While the opposing paradigms of globalization and fragmentation compete in often bloody and destructive ways in the world today, this book convincingly reminds us of the importance of finding out more about the complex and changing ways in which we are connected. The authors demonstrate that the more we understand our connectedness and deal with its consequences, the less dependent and helpless we become. Les migrations internationales sont devenues l'un des enjeux majeurs des rapports entre les États. Dans ce cadre, les mouvements de réfugiés et de déplacés liés aux conflits politiques, identitaires ou territoriaux témoignent de la fragilité de constructions nationales encore si souvent contestées. Les principales modalités d'accueil des réfugiés montrent bien les obstacles à l'intégration comme les limites d'une assistance humanitaire dont l'action reste plus curative que préventive. Mais la paix revenue, le retour et la réintégration des réfugiés dans leur pays d'origine se heurtent encore à des difficultés politiques, juridiques et économiques qui sont autant de freins à la reconstruction nationale et qui, par là même, dessinent les migrations internationales du futur. Tels sont quelques-uns des grands thèmes évoqués dans les différentes contributions de cet ouvrage, dont certaines, comme celles sur les camps palestiniens du Liban, sur la revendication territoriale des Sahraouis ou encore sur le difficile retour des réfugiés cambodgiens, sont d'une actualité toujours brûlante. International migration has become one of the major issues in relations between states. Within this framework, movements of refugees and displaced persons resulting from political, identify or territorial conflicts show the fragility of national constructions that are still so frequently contested. The main procedures for hosting refugees clearly show the obstacles to integration and the limits of humanitarian aid, whose action is more curative than preventive. However, when peace is restored, the return and re-integration of refugees in their home countries still corne up against political, legal and économie difficulties that ail hinder national reconstruction and also indicate the pattern of future international migration. In the past few years, the economic ramifications of aging have garnered close attention from a group of NBER researchers led by David A. Wise. In this volume, Wise and his collaborators continue to analyze a nexus of age-related issues. This volume begins by looking at the implications of private and public personal retirement plans, focusing in particular on the impact of 401(k) programs on retirement strategies in light of potential social security reform and factors such as annuitization and on asset accumulation. Next, the often-observed relationship between health and wealth is dissected from two different perspectives and correlated with striking increases in health-care spending over the past two decades, despite the improved health of older populations. The volume concludes with an investigation of the retirement effects of various social security provisions in both U.S. and German systems. This carefully developed collection expands the current investigative focus and broadens the dialogue on a rapidly growing area of social and economic concern.
